Everything about the product description is accurate except calling these round files.I was looking for files to sharpen some expensive hardened hole saws, like doing a chain saw, but these don't work well for this job.The diameters stated really are for the final approximate 10% of each file.All of them taper down to basically needle point tips, and since they are fairly short to begin with, you are lucky to get maybe 1/2" of real round sizing.The grit is pretty good and seems to stay on the stick just fine.If you want needle files, these would probably meet your needs.

I'm kind of surprised that I'm the first reviewer of these knives.The Wayne Barton method of chip carving is typically considered the best by the majority of chip carvers.These knives are American made replicas of the swiss-made knives that he has used for years.

These are the only two knives that he uses for all of his work, and if you haven't seen his work I would recommend that you buy a couple of his books or at least google his name to find some examples.You'll be impressed.

These chip knives are extremely sturdy.The blade steel runs all the way through the hardwood handle which adds heft and balance to the tool.They arrive already sharpened and only require about 5 minutes of honing to be razor sharp.I recommend the 8000 grit ceramic stone that he endorses.I bought the 800 grit that he also endorses, but it gets very little use from me since the steel holds it's edge very well and only requires a little polishing every so often with the 8000 grit to retain it's keen edge.

Overall, these are great chip carving knives.The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 was because the blade steel on the stab knife was not correctly ground down to match the hardwood handle exactly.There was just enough steel sticking up above the wood that it was uncomfortable.I know that this is nitpicky, and it only took me a minute to fix with my bench grinder and sandpaper, but I shouldn't have had to.For $50 I expect perfection.I know that's rare in this age, but call me old fashioned.Still, these are great knives and I expect them to outlive me.

I bought this because it looks identical to a set I got about a year ago that is great, and I think I got it on Amazon. That one was branded "Kronus". This one is branded "Hawk", and Amazon should be embarrassed to sell it at any price. The tools are extremely low quality, and the case is flimsy and doesn't close. This is the kind of quality I expect when I buy things at a dollar store. I'm returning it.

I bought these tools after constantly having to sharpen the cheap beginner's set I've been using.

Having just opened the box, all 8 tools seem well made.Bevel angles are appropriate for each tool.Cutting edges are ground but not deburred or honed.Flat ground surfaces are single faceted except the 1" skew chisel had two facets (a minor flaw). Ground gouge surfaces are single faceted except the 3/4" roughing gouge had two facets (another minor flaw).None of the surfaces are hollow ground, which makes honing more difficult if the worker decides to hone frequently instead of always going to the grinder.Blades are 1/4" thick HSS and should ride smoothly on the lathe's rest.Handles are smooth and contour is comfortable.Brass ferrules are locked in place and appear to be adequate.

The box is stiff paperboard.It would probably last a while if used occasionally or for travel.I would rather not have the box as I will make a wood box for these tools.

The chisel stays sharp but the head on the bit breaks within a few days use. We have a mortiser that we use in a production type atmosphere and it gets used. We have purchased several bits looking for something that maintains a good edge and stays sharp for a long time. These bits were not it. The chisel works and lasts but the head on the bit has broken several times, sometimes within hours sometimes 3 or 4 days. Unfortunately because the bit breaks the chisel is useless. We are still in search for the perfect bit.

Review of Robert Larson 765-5000 6-Piece Wood Carving Set

I bought this set in a woodworking store in Montana about five years ago and did some carving with them.They are good enough for hand carving but wouldn't recomend hitting them with a wooden mallet.They cut and held an edge well but some of the shanks came loose enough for me to spin them inside the handle after a while even though they were still fairly tight.I suppose that could be corrected by peening the steel band around the shank.
I was in Harbor Freight a few months ago and saw what seemed to be the exact same set but packaged differently for ten bucks.I'd just go there to be honest.

The tools are not ussable. There are very bad sharpened. They can no cut even paper.
The materias is OK, but if you want the tools to be usefull you must sharp them with stone and you'll spend too much time.

Ordered this set of chisels and when I opened the box you could tell they're cheaply made from China.They are roughly grounded and not worth the price of $40 dollars.If your are to send them back it's not worth it.First the shipping charges were high at almost $14.00 and they also add a restocking fee of 4 percent.If you're to send them back you'll come out loosing money. I own other Two Cherries chisels and I am very satisfied with them. When I bought them they were in perfect condition, sharp and clean. That is the reason why I decided to buy the set of carving tools for my wife. When it arrived, the V-tool chisel had a nick on the sharp edge. When I tried to sharpen one of the straight chisels on my Tormek I had a problem because the chisel was twisted and I could not manage to sharpen this one properly. It is still good tools but for the price I expected better.

I recently purchased the chisels and am very happy with them so far. The chisels came nicely polished right out of the box and require only minimal effort to hone them. They came nicely sharpened and were useable but need (like all edged tools) slight honing to be in tip top shape.
I did find (as expected) that the chisels were a little to thick for fine carving but I am well satisfied with them as I feel this is a good entry level set although it could have some other chisels added to make the set more complete. If you're looking for a starter set of carving chisels I feel you can't go wrong for with this set. The price is reasonable and the quality is what one would expect, the thick metal is forgiving and allows you to mess up sharpening a time or two.

I have been using these chisels for about 3 weeks now and a couple of them are already falling apart. The tools have become loose in the handles, and the pins that hold the brass rings around the top of the handles have broken off so the brass pieces fall off constantly. These chisels would probably be fine for turning spindles from softer, nearly round materials, but they will not hold up when used for turning square stock to round, especially if you are turning hard woods like oak and hickory. The only positive thing I have to say about these tools is that since they are high speed steel, they do hold an edge well. In conclusion, I would not order these chisels again, under any circumstances.

While the quality of these knives is well known in general, I was a little disappointed by the time I had to spend to dress the blades before using them. I don't know if the blades are left somewhat dull intentionally, but I expected a bit better. The knives do have a good solid comfortable feel and quality metal in the blades. I will likely purchase this brand in the future, but expect to spend time sharpening them before use for wood carving.

I have a set of these I purchased back when they were made in Sheffield.I bought a second set recently as a gift only to find they are now an asian product.In comparing the 2 sets the older set is definitely nicer, no molding marks on the handles, overall better metal finishing.That said these are still a great value.Unles you wish to spend alot more I don't think you will find a nicer chisel.I find them to be well balanced and hold a nice edge.

A favorite local tool shop that I frequent had a display of these on the counter. I was intrigued by the novelty of the design and after playing with the testable display I decided to lay out the $9 for one to try it on the job. This nailset works better, faster, easier and more precisely than any other nailset I have used. Example: you've just run oak crown in a room with a 12' ceiling and have a few nailheads sticking up. Instead of wearing your full belt, pulling out your hammer and trying to find the right size Stanley nailset, skipping off the nailhead- you just take the nailmaster, flip to the desired end, pull back, and SNAP!A month later I bought about 10 of them for Christmas presents to my employees and clients...Then I lost mine! On a more recent trip to Electric Tool I bought myself 3 of the nailmaster type and one each of the chisel and punch and promptly tagged them with marking paint to prevent future loss.
Being a contractor who works in a broad range of trades, I would guess that I have about $45K in various power and hand tools including the likes of Bosch, Powermatic and Festool. Funny how the two favorite tools in my collection are a nailset and my folding dozuki ... cost of each <$25. Only improvements I could suggest are rubber grips in high visibility colors.

Review of PSI Woodworking LCBT4 4 Piece Bowl Turning Lathe Chisel Set

I'm just getting started turning bowls, and this set was a valuable addition to my collection of tools. The quality is high compared to the cost; the tools are well made, comfortable to use, and substantial. The box they come in is good for collecting shavings and sawdust. I hate to throw it away, but I don't have a whole lot of use for it.

The most important thing about gouges is keeping them sharp, and there are lots of ways to do that. I haven't used any high-end tools, so I can't compare these ones to them with regard to holding an edge, but I've been happy with these so far. They have sufficient mass for bowl turning, though, and I've been comfortable with the profiles they came with. The scrapers are similarly substantial, though with every bowl I turn I rely on them a little less.

I paid more for one bowl gouge at Woodcraft than I did for this set, and I feel that this set is of comparable quality (aside from the handles, which are more rudimentary). I recommend this set to the beginning bowl turner.

Review of Stanley 16-007 5000 Series Chisel Set, 3-Piece

I used this chisel set to remove dry rot from a wooden post. After 5 minutes, the blade of the large chisel was already pitted and chipped. I don't know what the blade is made of, but it is evidently softer than dry rot. Then I used the small one, and it too was chipped and pitted after only 2 minutes.

The handles are made of plastic with no metal cap ends. These chisels are no better than what you get at a dollar store. I have been very disappointed with Stanley products lately. I bought Stanley leather work gloves that was literally unraveling at the seams as soon as I opened the package. I had to sew it back by hand. Then the inner lining started to fall apart after one use. No more Stanley for me!

I just recently got into wood turning and I enjoy it very much to say the least.The PSI 6 piece HSS turning set is a good addition to my shop.

Pros:Includes the basics for all of the basic turning needs.Handles feel sturdy and are connected to the blade well.Blades are holding strong so far. Hold an edge well.Easy to grind a new edge with a grinder.

Cons:Case is very cheap feeling.It came with a giant gash on the top of it, and to be nit picky, the hinges are on the wrong side.My Gouge blade seemed to be warped slightly. (I dont know if it is to be that way or if its defective.)

Overall, the few minor problems are outweighed by its pros.It is a good set, includes all that youd need to get going, they feel sturdy and hold an edge well.And they are cheap to boot.

Just cut a bunch of half blind dovetails in cherry with these.They were easy to sharpen (backs were nice and flat) and stayed sharp.Wood handles are a little square so they don't roll away and they really took a beating.They're also comfortable to hold.Blades are thin enough to fit into the corners of the dovetails.I first ordered the set but had to switch to getting them one at a time when the set was out of stock.Would somebody please ask them to make one in 1/8 inch?

Review of 6 Pc Firmer Chisel Set

When you come right down to it, firmer chisels are pretty darn simple tools; however, for a chisel to work very well, several criteria must be satisfied simultaneously in one tool:
(1) the thickness should not be an impediment to work;
(2) the back should be as flat as possible, preferably fine-ground or polished;
(3) the metal should be hard enough to hold an edge, but not so hard as to make the tool hard to sharpen;
(4) the blade and the handle should be integrally bound together;
(5) the center of the handle should coincide with the center of the cutting edge;
(6) the handle should be tough and durable and faithfully transmit force to the cutting edge.
(7) the tool should balance toward the top of the useable end of the handle.
I recently purchased the Diefenbacher chisel set directly from Diefenbacher.I have used a set of Marples chisels of the pre-Irwin era for years, and it is useful to compare them with the Diefenbachers.The Marples have a hard rubber handle with a metal striking cap, and look very much like a black-and-blue version of the Pro-Touch chisels currently available on Amazon.
(1) At equivalent width, the Diefenbachers are as thick as the Marples through the blade, but thinner along the bevel edges.This improves control in tight work, e.g., dovetails.
(2) The backs of the Marples chisels were all slightly convex, and it took a lot of work to get them flat.A couple still have rounded surfaces away from the cutting edges.All six of the Diefenbachers are dead flat out of the box, but require some polishing to obtain a smooth surface.
(3) The Marples chisels are allegedly RC 58, but I have read that 54-58 is more accurate.The Diefenbachers claim to be RC59, and either this is an overwhelming improvement in edge retention or the Marples chisels are a lot softer.
(4) Both chisels have thick tangs that (apparently) run the length of the handles.The Diefenbachers have some sort of retention cap around the tang that presumably serves to keep the wood handle from splitting.
(5) The Diefenbacher cutting edges are colinear with the center line of the handle, and the back is at a slight angle to the center line of the handle.This means the whole chisel must be at a slight angle to cut straight up and down (not good) but puts the cutting edge along the putative line of force when you strike the chisel.The Marples backs are parallel to the center line, putting the cutting edge off-center.This makes it fairly simple to align the tool for a straight cut, but can effectively transmit force at an angle.I find that without care, I often cut inside a line with the Marples chisels, but do not with the Diefenbacher.
(6) The Marples chisel handles are incredibly tough--the blade would surely deform before the handle.The wood handles of the Diefenbacher tools are asthetically much nicer, and are made of a very tough hardwood.The striking surface is wood as well (though darker, so perhaps a different species), and the centerline is yet another piece of wood, in this case a plug.I would think twice before using a metal or heavy wood mallet on one of these.More expensive wood handled chisels come with some sort of cap to sidestep this problem.It is a shame that the Diefenbachers do not.
(7) This is a personal criterion arising from experience with several types of chisels.The balance point for the Marples chisels is well back into the handle, particularly for the narrowest blades.As a result, it can be a challenge to hold the handle the way it seems to be designed and accurately place the cutting edge.This seems like a picky point until you have to cut 20 dovetails in a single session: about the 10th time you have to use two hands to position the blade, you will be ready to pack it in.The Diefenbacher chisels are all balanced very close to the bottom of the tang, the place you are most likely to hold it during positioning and work.This must be due in part to a shorter shaft within the wood handle, because the Diefenbachers are all somewhat lighter than the corresponding Marples.In any case, in my biased world this makes for much improved control.
With this in mind, and with the choices available on Amazon, here is my summary:
For about $10 more than a set of Irwin/Marples blue chips (missing the striking surface of the Pro-touch), and for about $5 less than a set of six Marples Pro Touch chisels, you will get superior tools in every regard but the striking surface of the handles.If you do woodworking as a hobby, and use your chisels no more than a few hours a week on average, you will not find a better value than the Diefenbacher set.If you are concerned about the all-wood handles, you could instead purchase Two Cherries, Hirsch, Sorby, etc., premium brands.You will get similar or slightly higher hardness, uncompromising quality, excellent handle designs, and astronomic prices.I'd rather buy a second set of Diefenbachers if and when the current set wears out--I'll spend no more, and perhaps by then the handles will have an upgrade.

The handles are comprised of the typical abuse hungry polymer plastic resin.I bought this set and threw one to each of the guys on my framing crew.We abuse these things. They are used to cut nails, pry walls, as screwdrivers and sometimes actually used as chisels should be.Fortunately the steel is easilly sharpened. 1 minute on the belt sander to remove the deep nicks and then about 5 minutes on the sharpening stones and we are sharp for another 2 weeks.If you want fine chisels for craftsmanship go buy a set of Marples or 2 Cherries...if you want a set to abuse, drop, clean your nails, pull slivers, play mumbley peg, pry walls, open paint cans, scredriver, pry up backing...etc etc etc.Then get these....and share !

Review of Irwin Marples M444/S4 4-Piece Blue Chip Bevel Edge Woodworking Chisel Set

Are these the world's best chisels? In a word, "No." But at this price they may be the world's best chisel value -- at least six stars out of five.
I own chisels that cost two-and-a-half times as much for ONE TOOL as this set of four. And there are true advantages to the Blue Chips, such as:
1) The handles are indestructible. You can bash away at them with the biggest mallet you can muster, or even a steel hammer.
2) Handles are NOT round. These tools never roll off my bench directly onto my edge-chipping concrete floor like some chisels that shall remain nameless.
3) They should last, basically, forever (meaning beyond my lifetime), because they're hardened virtually all the way up to the shank
The edges can get shaving sharp, so watch it -- they cut meat, too! I sunk the 3/4" over an inch deep into my left hand (doh!). However, the edge doesn't last as long as some pricier brands. Also, the backs are far from perfectly flat, and take some time to properly refine on a stone. In fact, the extra-wide Blue Chips are almost impossible to flatten completely -- but then, this set doesn't include any chisels over an inch.
These are very small gripes. Buy this set and be happy for years, maybe forever. Even if you move along to better (i.e. several times as expensive) frogslashers as time goes by, you'll never regret owning these. You can always use them to clean off extra glue -- or "demote" them to the secret depths of your tote-around toolbox, and hang fancier ones over your bench to impress your buddies.
You absolutely cannot go wrong with these chisels.

The PSI set cost me under $50 with free shipping and no tax.The blades on the PSI chisels measure between 6.25 to 6.5 inches from ferrule to tip, which is the same as the more expensive Woodcraft set.The Woodcraft set came with what I felt were clumsy, overly large, overly long, and slippery handles that felt too light, while the PSI handles are made with denser/harder/heavier wood that IMO handle better for more detailed work.The overall fit and finish of the PSI set is better, except that the Woodcraft set is sharpened better.For some reason, the edges of the PSI chisels that are supposed to be flat (not the ground cutting edges) round over near the tips of the new tools.Grinding/sharpening gets rid of the problem for good but that means you'll have to spend more time preparing the tools for use.This is the reason I gave it 4 stars out of 5.The PSI set also comes in an softwood/plywood case while the Woodcraft set came in a sad cardboard box.Funny enough, the PSI case needed some fixing just as I had read from the other reviews here.It wasn't broken though, there just wasn't enough glue applied to the lid and bottom of the case.A tiny bit of glue and some light clamping pressure fixed it up like new - a job that really should be a piece of cake for anyone.Amazon did a good job of packing it.The case is actually a nice touch.It's good enough to use on it's own, but I keep all my tools in a large rolling chest with drawers.The tools will roll around even if your drawers are lined with the good tacky drawer liners, so I unscrewed the hinges of the box, removed the lid and placed the box in one of my shallow drawers. This saved me the trouble of having to make individual partitions for each chisel inside my drawers to keep them in place.The PSI set was overall better, cost about 40% less, and came with three extra chisels, so I returned the more expensive set. I found all the tools included useful, except I don't need two skew chisels of similar size so I plan on grinding the tip into a different shape when the need arises.The well known Sorby chisels are good, but I couldn't justify spending $30-$40 for just one tool when an extra $10-$20 buys me eight of these.

The Marples Blue Chip was one of the best intermdiate level user chisels available for many years.I had a few doubts when I ordered this set, that the quality had survived the purchase of the line by Irwin.

After a quick bit of sharpening, to be sure the edge was sharp, I cut a few mortises with the 1/2-inch one.After cutting six mortises I accidentally cut myself with it.It was still sharp enough that the cut looked, felt, and bled, like one from a razor blade.

In conclusion, the only reason they don't earn a fifth star is that the blades are covered with a clear coating, which was a pain to remove so I could hone the backs.If I tried to hone the backs without removing it first it clogged up my stones.I know that the majority of users probably won't hone the back before they sharpen them, so for most people it won't be an issue.

These are a very fine set of chisels. The handle looks a little funky until you start handling them. Wow! I added a micro edge and found the blades are ground almost perfect. I am very impressed with these.

I'm a remodel carpenter, and I do a lot of framing, so thats where these chisels get most of their use. They are great in that capacity, pretty sharp, and keep an edge well despite some pretty serious abuse. If you are looking for finish carpentry chisels, or cabinetry chisels, I hihgly recommend that you spend some more money, since these are not good enough for that kind of work, especially in hardwoods.

I've been trying to find a good starter set of chisels. These fit the bill. Better than some I tried, but didn't break the bank. Came in sharp enough, but as with any chisel required a little touching up. The only downfall was the packaging. Outer box was fine. Product box was dirty and wrapped in shrink-wrap. Some very small dings in the blade. Product showed no signs of use, so most likely just a factor of the price-point.
